A Slice of the Western Ghats: AGUMBE

Agumbe is a tiny village in Shimoga district, and part of the eco-sensitive zone of the Western Ghats, the lifeline of the coast. The region receives very heavy rainfall, and is also referred to as the Cherrapunji of the South. The region has lush beautiful rain forests, and is also home to a number of unique flora and fauna, indigenous to the zone. The enigmatic King Cobra also resides in the in the thick rainforests.

The fourteen hairpin bends are famous, besides being dangerous. Driving here is pure anticipation for the others on the road to drive safe, as much as oneself. Sometimes the driving gets crazy though, as cabs tend to overtake even on the acute bends to save a few minutes.

There is a sunset point at one of the higher points, from where the view of the vast green expanse and the verdant landscape can leave one exhilarated. The visitors gallery appears a bit precarious though. Make sure you spend sometime here.
(Not maintained well, lot of rubbish strewn around. When will we learn!)

We thoroughly enjoyed the drive through this region. The green canopy overhead was refreshing. The fresh jungle scent felt so good too! We didn't spot many jungle inmates, except for monkeys and a lion-tailed macaque. Early morning or late evening would be the best time of the day to visit the region.
