My Favourite Story-tellers!

Writing this post is very very special, because this deals with something I love the most- reading. What began as an act to get even with my cousin as a three-year old who did not even know how to read, eventually turned into a habit for life. It would be extremely difficult to pick just one author as my favourite- for me, favourites change with every book I read. Often, I get so enthralled in a book and the characters, I almost tend to forget the hand that penned the script and brought the character to life!

So, after much thought, these are the authors that make my top five.

R. K. Narayan: RKN created the charming town of Malgudi, and with that created a simple beautiful world, where life went on (and still goes on) in the same way it would have a hundred years ago. Natgeo India recently published an article on finding this fictional town. And a general belief is that Malgudi simply is derived from Malleswaram+Basavangudi! Swami, the charming, curious, naughty boy, along with his friends, Mani- the large simpleton, and Rajam- the smart boy from Madras, manage to leave a lasting impression on whoever reads the book. RKN continues to be my favourite Indian author.

Enid Blyton: Thanks to her, primary school days were so much fun. And summer holidays became the perfect time to go hunting about in the lane behind our house, for a mystery to present itself, for us to solve! What with the Find-Outers, the Famous Five, the Secret Series, Secret Seven, and so many other books, we almost began to hallucinate finding clues behind the bushes at the farthest end of the backyard. Above all, what I liked the most was the way she described what the children would eat- how I wished my Grandma would make hot scones for me too! And reading the adventures the girls at Malory Towers had, I wished I too went to such a school- where the swimming pool set amidst rocks was filled with natural sea water, by the tide!

J. K. Rowling: As I turned a little too old for Enid Blyton, I was introduced to Harry Potter, and it's not been the same ever since. Hogwarts became home. Thanks to my friends sharing the same level of Potter-mania that I did, both in school and college, we'd spend hours discussing HP. The long wait to each book, especially the fifth book was painful. And the Potter-head-edness has only strengthened over the years. I've lost count of the number of times I've read the books. As I've said earlier, she did make growing up, Magical!

Jeffrey Archer: This Gentleman is a maverick. I've read most of the books by him; one feature that stands out in all of them is his story telling. The way it flows, how every page throws surprises at the reader, and how most of the times, it is impossible to predict the ending, is wonderful. Kane and Abel continues to be one of my favourite books. And the current series, the Clifton Chronicles are wonderful too. The cliff-hanger ending of every book of this series, makes you so impatient! I almost feel jealous of the people, who'll begin reading the series now to finish the six released so far, just in time for the last book that'll be out in November. People are also predicting that, just like the central character in the series, Harry Clifton, who is expected to hang up his boots in the final book, so also will Archer, as the series is increasingly beginning to mirror his life-story. I hope not!

Harper Lee: She is a legend. As I recently wrote about her, it would largely be a repetition if I wrote elaborately again. She has just two books to her credit- To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set A Watchman. But the characters of Atticus Finch and Scout that she created, have become immortal. Atticus Finch has become the sort of lawyer every aspiring lawyer should look up to and hope to be- righteous, integral, honest. There are lessons for life in these two books, if one reads between the lines, that is.
