Magical Mysore

The city of Mysore (Mysuru will still take some time to sink in, or it probably never will, just like Mumbai never did), is a heritage city, perfect for a weekend getaway. It has places to visit/things to do that will cater to different tastes. It can be a fantastic base point for daytrips to various points of interest around such as Shivanasamudra waterfalls, Somnathpur, Talakadu, Melkote, Bylakuppe to name a few.

The city has an old world charm to it, hard to describe in words effectively. The streets are broad and well planned in most areas, that leaves me marveling at the foresight the city-planner had so many years ago. Greenery is well maintained throughout the city. The buildings themselves are not high-rises; towering up to a maximum of 3-4 floors, the city looks spread –out and neat. And many of them are colored in a pleasant pink/yellow hue, with li’l domes on top.

The key attraction in the city is the Mysore Palace or the Amba Vilas palace, designed by Henry Irwin. Located on Sayyaji Rao Road (so named after Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Vadodara, in honor of the friendship Sayajirao shared with the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wodeyar), it is a magnificient example of Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, The halls are huge, the paintings are beautiful, and the colors lovely. If you're an art/history buff, you could spend hours inside studying the paintings. The 750-kg golden howdah carried by the royal elephant on the last day of Dasara is beautiful. The sky was clear and blue, which made the deep pink marble domes look all the more pretty.

I simply couldn't get enough of the palace!
The railway station is worth a visit too. Colored in pink, it did make a pretty sight.

A great miss on this visit was the lighting up of the palace that is done for an hour on Sunday evenings. Maybe that's a reason enough that calls for yet another Mysore trip!
